The Sunrise

Do you a problem that feels too daunting to face? Do you have a concern or dilemma for which you can’t find a solution, no matter how hard you try? This week, I’ve been thinking about all the miracles of Jesus – the stories you teach kids in Sunday school. Every single miracle has to start with an impossible situation. Think about the stories in the word of God that aren’t just stories – a woman who had been sick for over a decade without hope, a man born blind, a demon-possessed man who lived in caves that no one could restrain. The power of God is always displayed most clearly in something that seems impossible!

Jesus came to the earth as a demonstration of the Father’s heart. God didn’t love the world any more when He sent Jesus as He did when He sent Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage thousands of years before. God’s love has always been. He is love. However, humanity could not fully understand that love until His Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1-3).

Hebrews 1:3 says,

“[Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

Jesus is the exact imprint of the nature of God. He is the perfect demonstration of the will and character of the Father.

John 14:10 says,

“Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.”

John 12:49 says,

“For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak.”

Everything Jesus did was an outworking of the Father’s will and God never changes! Anything Jesus did then, He is still willing to do now, because miracles demonstrate God’s compassion and power.

John 14:12 says,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

When the sick receive healing, we see God’s mercy and love and He is glorified. Everything Jesus did when He walked the earth is still the will of God.

Acts 10:38 says,

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

The Gospel of Jesus Christ – the truth of the Word of God – isthe answer for every impossible problem.

Luke 1:78-80 says about Jesus:

“…because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

This verse has been on my mind all week. Jesus is the tender mercy of God to broken humanity. He is the sunrise that visited the earth, and that sun has not gone down. I remember when I first encountered Jesus, and I saw light for the first time. It was like the colors of the sunrise after a very long night. Have you met Him? Do you remember when His light shone on you for the first time?

2 Corinthians 4:6 says,

‘For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Proverbs 4:8 says,

“The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.”

Jesus came to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death. How many people around us – in our families, our workplaces, or our communities – are still in the shadow of that darkness? How many have not met Jesus and had the sun rise in their hearts for the first time? The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for salvation and if we will allow God to move our hearts for those around us, we will see the Gospel reach people we thought were too far away to be reached!

Jesus is the light of heaven. He is the demonstration of the heart of the Father. He is the imprint of God’s nature. He went about doing only good. He healed everyone who came to Him. He raised the dead and cleansed lepers. He loved the broken, the destitute, the outcasts. He corrected the religious and loved even the ones who would betray Him. He is the sunrise, and we are still in the light of the day that dawned when Jesus stepped on the earth. John described the resurrected Jesus as follows in Revelation 1:12-16:

“Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man dressed in a long robe, with a golden sash around His chest. The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a blazing fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters. He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp double-edged sword came from His mouth. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.”

I encourage you to read that again. I’ve been captivated by those verses this week. His face shines like the sun. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is the heart of heaven. He is the authority of the Father demonstrated. He is the perfect will of God mercifully poured out for us. Be encouraged this week! That’s the light that is in the heart of every believer. You can’t walk in darkness when you carry the light in you!
