The Truth About You

Just because you believe something doesn’t make it true.

One of the greatest misconceptions in our society is the idea that an opinion has any effect on truth. I’ve heard highly educated people purport this idea, using terminology like “your truth” or “my truth” but the idea that you can create your own reality is a lie.

Truth cannot be changed, but whether or not you believe the truth will affect your reality. Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). The level of freedom we walk in is a direct reflection of our revelation of truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:16).

This week, God has laid on my heart the importance of knowing the truth about us. As believers, we don’t want to be self-focused, but we do have to live in an understanding of who we are. As I began to look at what the Bible says about who we are, I was humbled. I would encourage you to spend time reading each of these verses and studying them. It’s so important that we know who God is, but it won’t make any difference in the world, unless we know who we are in Him. Look at what God says about His people. Look at what God says about you:

1. You are saved.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)
2. Your sins are forgiven and forgotten.
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake. You are the righteousness of God, in Christ Jesus. (1 John 2:12)
3. You are a people for His own possession.
You are…a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him
who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
4. You are salt.
“You are the salt of the earth.” (Matthew 5:13)
5. You are light. This doesn’t say you have light. It says you are light.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14)
6. You are from God – made in His image.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)
7. You are a living stone, part of God’s house.
You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:5)
8. You are redeemed.
‘But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”’ (Isaiah 43:1)
9. You are God’s children—children of promise and children of the light.
For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. (1 Thessalonians 5:5)
10. You are a co-heir with Jesus Christ.
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children,
then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order
that we may also be glorified with him. (Romans 8:16-17)
11. You have been raised with Jesus.
“[God] raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6-7)
12. You have been loved with everlasting love.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” (Jeremiah 31:3)
13. You are citizens of heaven with the saints and members of God’s house.
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19)
14. You have the greater One in you.
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
15. You carry the authority of heaven.
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19)
16. You are a royal priesthood.
“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” (1 Peter 2:9)
17. You carry the power to heal the sick and displace the darkness.
‘And proclaim as you go, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.’ (Matthew 10:7-8)
18. You are being guarded by Him for salvation.
By God’s power, [you] are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:7)
19. You know Him who is from the beginning. (1 John 2:13)
20. You have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:13)
21. You know the Father. (1 John 2:13)
22. You are free from bondage and corruption.
Creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. (Romans 8:21)
23. You are saved from death and free from fear of it.
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. (Hebrews 2:14-15)
24. You can ask anything according to His will.
This is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (1 John 5:14-15)
25. You are the bride of Jesus Christ, robed in pure garments He bought with His blood.
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. (Ephesians 5:23)

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-10)
