This week, I want to talk about the power of a seed. A seed looks nothing like what it’s capable of producing. An unassuming acorn doesn’t look like it could ever be a mighty oak tree, but within that seed is the complete genetic blueprint necessary to yield a tree and countless more seeds. The Word of God has a lot to say about seeds, in various contexts. The concept of a seed is used many times in relation to the importance of giving (Galatians 6:7, 2 Corinthians 9:6-10). The tiny mustard seed is used as an analogy for the power of faith (Matthew 17:20, Luke 17:6). The Bible also uses seeds to talk about the power of God’s Word. All these things convey the truth that seemingly small things carry the power to produce great results. Mark 4:30-32 says,
‘And He said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”’
We can never underestimate the power of small beginnings, because every mighty tree was once a tiny seed.
Matthew 13:3-9 says,
‘He told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose, they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”’
When God’s Word comes to us, even as a tiny seed, it carries the blueprint to produce God’s power in us. The DNA of Jesus is in every word God speaks, and if we allow it to grow and develop in us, it will become a mighty tree! In the same chapter of God’s Word as the parable of the sower, we see two parables about the power of God’s kingdom. Matthew 13:31-33 says,
‘He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”’
Jesus teaches again about the power of a tiny seed and confirms it with the parable of the leaven. This image is even more powerful when you realize three measures of flour isn’t just a few loaves. In the original language, it says three “seahs” of flour, which in modern measurements would equal roughly 60 pounds of dough. This parable wasn’t about a woman mixing some yeast in her dough for supper. It was a picture of a woman “hiding” a tiny bit of leavening in a massive amount of dough. The result was not that the leavening disappeared, but that the entire 60 pounds of dough, enough to yield up to 100 large loaves of bread, was transformed. Jesus emphasized the power of a tiny thing to transform everything it touches. He wanted us to understand the power of something that seems small, a tiny seed or a “hidden” bit of leaven.
We do also have to remember the power of other seeds. The enemy will also attempt to plant seeds in our lives. These are the weeds that tried to choke out the Word in the parable of the sower. The Word of God also talks about the weeds of the enemy that the Father will separate when judgment comes (Matthew 13:24-30).
The enemy will always try to plant seeds in our hearts through lies. It won’t usually be obvious deception, but tiny seeds. In the Garden of Eden, the serpent didn’t come to Eve and say, “Disobey God, so sin can enter the world and every generation after you can suffer the consequences.” She would not have disobeyed if she could clearly see the consequences amid the temptation. The enemy came to her with just a seed of doubt. He said, “Did God actually say…?” (Genesis 3:1) The seed of that lie led her to disobedience. Jesus told the disciples to “beware the leaven of the Pharisees” (Mark 8:15). Just as the seed of God’s Kingdom will grow in us and produce life, the seeds of the enemy, the seeds of doubt, fear, and all manner of lies, will grow and bring death. We have to ensure we are cultivating the soil of our heart and guarding against the seeds of the enemy by the power of His Word! We have to ensure we are allowing only life-giving seeds to take root in our hearts.
God’s Word can transform not only our own lives, but every place that God plants us, if we allow every seed He sows in us to have free rein in our lives. Jesus is the Word, the seed that God planted in the earth. John 12:23-24 says,
‘But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.”’
The Father sent Jesus as a seed. He didn’t send Him as a king to make Himself known. He sent Him as a seemingly insignificant man, a carpenter, a teacher, to influence one small nation at a seemingly insignificant point in history. However, that seed has been bearing fruit in the earth from the moment He was planted!
1 Peter 1:23 says,
“…you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.”
We are born again through the imperishable seed that is Jesus Christ when we receive Him through God’s Word!
This week, remember the power of a seed. The truth of God’s Word planted in our hearts will change everything if we allow it to grow and transform us. We may not see the results we want instantaneously, but as we cultivate the soil of our lives, His Word will do what He says it will do. It will set us free. It will change us. It will purify and empower us. It will allow us to see His Kingdom come everywhere we go, as He touches the world around us. Allow the power of His Word to change you, like leaven changes bread. Allow His Word to take root in you and grow from a seed to a mighty tree that bears fruit. The truth will always transform and His truth is planted in you!
