This week, I want to share some thoughts with you about the mind. I believe it’s something we should talk about more as believers because of the importance the Word of God places on it. Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, taught that a precursor to discerning the will of God is the renewal of your mind!
Romans 12:1-2 says,
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
We are saved by the blood of Jesus the moment we accept what He did for us on the cross and give Him our lives. However, there is a lifetime of transformation that must then take place, as He continually makes us more like Him. The word transformed in the original language is rooted in the idea of “metamorphosis.” It’s the picture of a complete transformation—like a caterpillar into a butterfly. How does this verse say we’re transformed? By the renewal of our minds. We cannot minimize the importance of our minds on our lives in Jesus! In addition, this verse teaches that in order for us to accurately discern the will of God, we must be transformed by this renewed mind. Look at the verse again! It says, “be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern the will of God…” Many Christians live in confusion because they try to hear God and live their Christian life with a mind that has not been renewed. God’s voice is always a clear sound, and it always aligns with the Bible. We have the promise of John 10:27 that His sheep know His voice. God does not intend for His will for your life to be a mystery. He desires to reveal it through His Word and His Spirit!
1 Corinthians 2:12 says,
“No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”
Through the Spirit of God, we can live understanding the heart of the Father!
In Ephesians 1:17 Paul prayed,
“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give [them] the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.”
1 Corinthians 2:16 says,
“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
There is revelation knowledge that comes only through knowing Him. You can have the mind of Jesus! It’s not something we have to fight to figure out but something we learn to walk in as we are transformed in Him. We cannot be renewed apart from His Word and His Spirit. Transformation is a spiritual miracle that takes place through Him alone and it’s a promise for every single one of us. However, the promise takes some action on our part.
Our mind (like our body) is something God has given us, and we have the responsibility to take care of it and ensure it is in line with His Word. We are not slaves to our minds!
2 Corinthians 10:5 says,
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
You have the power to take every thought captive and choose to dwell on the Word of God. You can make up your mind to think and say only what aligns with His Word.
Philippians 4:8-9 says,
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
A renewed mind thinks only on the things listed above. A renewed mind thinks only on things that give life. If your mind has been full of negativity, fear, and lies, it may seem like a daunting or impossible task, but it’s not. He is always faithful to His Word. As we are diligent to keep His Word in our hearts, our minds, and our mouths, we will be transformed. We have to actively choose to fill our minds with the Word of God until we are completely new! The enemy and the world will try to fill your thoughts with everything but truth, but the peace of God is a guard for your mind (Philippians 4:7). The more you replace those thoughts with the truth of His Word, the easier it becomes!
These are Biblical truths that modern science has confirmed. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a medical (not Biblical) therapeutic approach that is centered on identifying and replacing negative thought patterns. Even though it’s not based in God’s Word, it aligns with what we’ve been talking about. Neuroscience has shown that the brain is capable of change and adaptation and that replacing toxic thoughts transforms lives. New thoughts physically create new neural pathways in your brain. If that works in the world, how much more can you be transformed by filling your mind with the truth of God’s Word! These are scientific studies, but thousands of years before scientists could physically see the power of a life-giving thought, the Holy Spirit urged us to think only on those things that are true, honorable, just, and pure. God knew the power of your thoughts on your life!
We cannot minimize the importance of allowing our minds to be renewed, by His Word. If there is a thought that doesn’t align with the truth – whether it be fear or anger or negativity – we can choose to take it captive and replace it with the Word of God. You can be made new by the truth of His Word! You can live in absolute and complete peace, freedom, and joy. God’s Word and Spirit will renew your mind – physically, spiritually, and emotionally. You can live with the mind of Christ, free from everything that has afflicted you. His Word is as true now as it was the day the Holy Spirit inspired it, and we encourage you to take ahold of that truth today!
