Sealed By The King

Last week, we talked about the fact that the Holy Spirit is referred to as a “seal” multiple times in the Word of God.

2 Corinthians 1:22-23 says,

“It is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put His seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Ephesians 1:13 says,

“In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit…”

We must understand the significance of this seal. As we discussed last week, in ancient times, kings used signet rings, engraved with the royal emblem or symbol, to seal letters or other documents, serving both as a mark of authenticity and a symbol of authority. When pressed into hot wax or clay, the signet left a seal that acted as the king’s signature and guaranteed the authenticity of the words enclosed.

This week, I’ve been thinking about the authority a seal carries. We see an example of this in the book of Esther. If you haven’t read it, Esther is a short and powerful story of God’s providential protection of the Jewish people. Esther was a Jewish girl who became the Queen by the plan of God. Haman, an evil advisor to the king, tricked him into issuing an order that would destroy the Jewish people in an act of genocide. However, the Jewish people fasted and prayed. Esther then sought favor with the king to save her people and Haman’s evil plan was exposed. The King then issued a new decree allowing the Jewish people to defend themselves and preventing the genocide.

Esther 8:8 says,

“You may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king’s ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s ring cannot be revoked.”

That line of scripture is so powerful. A decree written in the king’s name and sealed with his authority cannot be revoked. Esther 8:9-10 goes on to say,

“The king’s scribes were summoned at that time… and an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king’s signet ring.”

The king did not go to all 127 provinces to deliver the edict proclaiming the deliverance of the Jewish people. The decree was read by the carriers of the king’s message, but it carried as much authority as if the king himself stood before the people.

We, as the church, often think of ourselves as carriers of the King’s message, but the truth is even more powerful than that. Moses carried the King’s message on tablets of stone, but by the blood of Jesus, the message is now written on the heart of every believer. Jeremiah 31:33 says,

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

As a believer in Jesus Christ, you do not just carry the message of salvation. You don’t just deliver the Word of God as an edict of the King. You are His message. You are His declaration of deliverance. Your life is to be the decree of the King. The Bible does not say He gave us a message sealed with the Holy Spirit. It says when we believed in Him, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit – His signet ring.

2 Corinthians 3:2-3 says,

“You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

You are a letter from Jesus Christ, written not with ink, but the Holy Spirit. You are a letter to be known and read by all. Your life is to be a declaration, sealed with the authority of the King – an edict proclaiming that salvation has come and the kingdom of God is here.

Matthew 28:18-20 says,

‘Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”’

The king in the book of Esther did not go to all 127 provinces to deliver his edict. The message sealed with his authority carried as much power as if he was there. In the same way, Jesus has not Himself gone to every human being that has ever lived. He is not still physically on the earth working to reach the lost. He came 2,000 years ago to a tiny nation. Israel is roughly the size of New Jersey and could fit into the United States 365 times. The majority of Jesus’ ministry took place on an even smaller platform – in an area covering roughly 12 square miles. However, the impact of His life and the reach of His authority has no end. The Gospel of Jesus Christ will be preached to every nation, tribe, and tongue – in every desolate and isolated place – before He returns. When He ascended, He gave His people authority and told them to wait for the One who would clothe them with power. He told them to wait for the One who would be as a seal – declaring and confirming the authority of the message written in them. The Gospel is in our hearts to be delivered to the world by our lives, and the message is sealed with the authority of heaven – the Holy Spirit.

This week, we encourage you to walk with the authority and power of heaven He has placed in you. The church is His message to the world. Your life carries the authority of the King because He lives in you! As a believer, you are sealed with His Spirit. The new covenant is signed by His own blood. We live and walk in an authority that cannot be revoked. The world is waiting to read the declaration of their deliverance written in our hearts by the King Himself!
