This week, I want to share what has been on my heart about the blessing of the Lord. God’s blessings should not be the focus of our relationship with Him, but we should expect them. Many people expect tests and trials they wrongly attribute to the Lord more than they expect His blessing. However, it contradicts His Word to expect anything less than blessing when we serve Him.
Abraham was the first man in the word of God with whom God made a covenant and part of that covenant was favor and blessing. Genesis 12:1-3 says,
““I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
That is a beautiful promise made to Abraham and his descendants, but it was not only for them!
Galatians 3:14 says,
“He (Jesus) redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
Galatians 3:26-29 says,
“In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Deuteronomy 28 describes the abundant blessing God promised to pour on His people as they kept His covenant. The first two verses say,
“If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God."
It goes on to list many powerful blessings for obedience –wealth, healing, and protection. I would recommend reading the whole chapter, along with the curses that come with disobedience.
In Jesus, we are heirs to all the blessings and promises of God. Even more than that, we are heirs of the inheritance of Jesus Himself.
Romans 8:14 says,
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
Now, the verse does say we are to share in His suffering that we may share in His glory. Many people interpret that to mean we will have only suffering on earth so we can rejoice in heaven but that is not what the Bible teaches. The blessing of Abraham was a literal blessing on the earth. The blessing God gave His people in Deuteronomy 28 was a literal blessing on the earth. While there are trials, the Word of God teaches we are more than conquerors. The church Paul wrote to was facing persecution, but he encouraged them with the truth that God’s promises are greater.
Romans 8:28 says,
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
Romans 8:31-33;37 says,
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
We can expect the blessing of God even now, that He would be revealed in our lives to the world around us.
James 1:17 says,
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, in whom there is no shadow of turning.”
When God blesses His people, the world sees His goodness. When God heals His people, the world sees His heart. When God protects His people, the world sees His character. He’s a good Father and His blessing is one of the ways He demonstrates who He is. It’s foolish for us to believe our covenant in Jesus carries less blessing and promise than His covenant with Abraham or Moses. Hebrews 8:6 says,
“But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.”
Every promise He has made to His people will stand. That truth is for His church, which has been spiritually grafted in, and for Israel, who walks in the blessing of a covenant God has promised never to break. We are blessed as children of God, and we should expect those blessings even now. To conclude, I just want to share a few more verses about the blessing of God. Be encouraged this week! In Jesus, you live in the favor of the One who holds the universe in the palm of His hand. His blessing is favor, peace, freedom, provision, healing, protection, and the power of His Spirit. It’s every good promise of His Word and it’s for you!\

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”
Proverbs 10:22 says,
“The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it."

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
Ephesians 1:3 says,
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”
